History
Fendant is a special type of Chasselas whose berries "split"
when squeezed between the fingers and can be found in
the Chablais region of Valais as early as the 18th century.
From 1848 onwards, Fendant became the driving force
behind the commercial development of Valais wineries and
was actively promoted, to the point where it supplanted the
old indigenous grape varieties. From 1936, the people of
Valais fought to protect this appellation, which was coveted
by producers from Geneva and Vaud. Fendant du Valais
obtained its protected designation in 1966, and despite the
successful rehabilitation of indigenous specialities, Fendant
remains the king of Valais whites. It accounts for a third of
the wine-growing area of the canton of Valais and is the
ambassador of Swiss white wines beyond its borders.
